The temptation is real!
When I see a product hyping up big promises of anti-aging properties and smoother, more even-toned, radiant skin and transformations, something inside of me hopes, “maybe this one will work?”
Beyond claims of nearly impossible feats, when the price tag on the product screams anything above $50 (let alone the $120 price tag on ClarityRX’s Sleep It Off Mask), my first thought is, “it better work!” Then, the more logical part of my mind alleges, “I mean, it has to do something with a price tag that high!”
I mean, with today’s science and technology, we should have products that perform miraculous tricks!
But, I digress. When I first started Bethany’s Pretties, I mentioned that I was in search of the fountain of youth. While I have found plenty of products that have promised to turn back the hands of time and not only erase the aging, but also deliver youthful characteristics to our skin, bodies, hair, etc., not many have actually come through.
Still yet, that lust to find something that actually stands up to its promises, so that we can bask in our newfound youth, will not subside. Therefore, I embarked on this journey to seek out products with big promises and try them out.
Meet ClarityRX’s Sleep It Off Mask, at $120 for 3.5 oz. (100 grams), a hefty price that would: a) pay my gas bill, b) buy food for several days (even for my 10 person fam), or c) buy me a fabulous new outfit – or ten, depending where I shopped!
But the promise says, “Transform your skin!!!!” And it says that its a natural alternative to retinol. The magical R word. Ughhhhhh the struggle is real!
Typically, at first sight, delightfully attractive packaging would initially entice me a wee bit and give me an excuse to admire it, but, in all honesty, the packaging is crisp and almost clinical. See?
So, curiosity based on the promises and price tag lead me to read further.
The Clinical Studies
I admit, clinical studies entice me way more than packaging. Here they are:
A 21-Day Clinical Study of Blue Green Algae Extract showed:
- 32% Improvement of Fine Lines & Wrinkles
- 63% Improved Cellular Regeneration
- 63% Improved Surface and Smoother Texture
Then it says:
“A safe, yet effective way to shed your skin of unwanted conditions such as rough texture, loss of elasticity, dark spots and fine lines/wrinkles without any of the side effects in only 3 weeks!“
It also boasts, a “powerful combination of B Vitamins, Amino Acids, and Ginger & Orange Extracts.“
Then, I looked at the ingredient list.
Purified Water (Aqua), Diheptyl Succinate (Sugar Cane), Capryloyl Glycerin, Algae Extract, Sorbitol, Orange Peel, Ginger, Crambe Abyssinica (Mustard) Seed Oil, Grapeseed Oil, Squalene, Hyaluronic Acid, Caprylic Capric Triglyceride, Glycerin, Xanthan Gum, Sodium Benzoate, Gluconolactone, Calcium Gluconate, Polysorbate 60, Vanillyl Butyl Ether, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin.
Hunnay! Need they say more? I was sold. Hello, Ramen noodles for the next month, but ok. I’m going to have fabulous, flawless skin in 21 days!
Let’s cut to the chase, because you’re here for the deets.
Did it work?
I should probably mention one more thing that the box says, because it is conveniently weaseled into the wording like no big deal – It says that it “goes from a warming nighttime transforming mask to a nourishing moisturizer all in one while you sleep.“
Okay, so nullify all that you typically think when you hear the word mask. It’s a glorified moisturizing cream, if you will. It goes on white, like most creams, but practically immediately changes to a consistency that feels very similar to my oils, maybe on a lighter level, like a thick serum. At the same time, it does start to absorb expeditiously and doesn’t feel as greasy and slick as an oil would.
I actually got excited when I felt the warming sensation. It really does start to warm up, but surprisingly, it doesn’t happen right away! It kinda sneaks up on you just when you think it won’t happen.
Here comes that transformation that they were talking about! That excitement was short-lived as I realized – OMG! Holy hell! – it was like I was sitting with my face far too close to the fireplace and I couldn’t just scoot back to alleviate the heat.
I started to envision my skin blistering and looking like a blotchy, painful looking red mess in the morning – or possibly within moments – if this “warming” sensation kept up! What have I done? I have tested hundreds – maybe even thousands – of products. This is definitely one of the more fatal calamities of trying skincare.
At this point, I will interject that if you have sensitive skin, you may want to do a patch test. Also, do not. I repeat – DO NOT put the mask on your lips! Unless you want to burn, baby, burn those puppies! I would suggest applying Vaseline on your lips prior to using the mask to protect your lips from the torture.
To my relief, (let’s just call it what it was) the burning began to diminish. Although it seemed to last longer, it was probably less than 5 minutes until my face was back to a tolerable warmth level. As fast as it heated up, it was gone. I can only assume this is part of what helps to get deep down into the skin and help to shed the skin cells that need to be rejuvenated.
My skin had already absorbed the majority of the mask – cream – whatever, and I wondered what the morning would bring. I was like a child on Christmas morning, running to the mirror to see what my skin looked like the next morning. Was I being too hasty, expecting overnight results?
Surprisingly, I wasn’t. No doubt about it, there were no out-of-this-world miraculous results, but my face did look like I had applied one of those blurring products to it. My complexion was definitely smoother!
My face also looked healthy and hydrated, and didn’t feel greasy or slick at all. In fact, it felt super soft, just like a baby’s bum, and incredibly moisturized! Dare I say my skin was glowing?
Now, I’ve tried other products that cultivated similar results. Maybe not as fast, but I was still stuck on getting my $120 out of this jar! After all, one can only take so much of Ramen noodles! The whole “like a natural retinol” concept had yet to prove itself. My fine lines and wrinkles were still there.
So, I continued the 21 day regimen. The part of me that secretly believes that beauty is painful started to look forward to the warming effect each night. In reality, as time went on, it wasn’t as bad as the first time.
Even if it felt like torture, though, I would still use it, because the 21 day difference is miraculous! If anyone has told you that acne scars cannot be diminished without laser or other extensive treatments, do the ClarityRX Sleep It Off Mask for 21 days and then go and pay them a visit.
I had a very recent battle with persistent cystic acne, and although just a couple of my worst acne scars were still there, they were barely visible, and a great deal lighter, as well as obscure enough that a light foundation – or even BB Cream – would have them blended right in. My skin tone is so pretty, I don’t mind going without makeup at all.
I also had sun damage on my lower cheeks that has evened out. While it’s not perfect, the difference is beyond words. My skin is brighter and tighter and plumped.
Not tired looking.
Wrinkles? I would say that I had more fine lines than actual wrinkles, but under my eyes, which was a problem spot for me, is now super hydrated and not as elastic-y looking. My forehead, where I have the deeper smile/frown wrinkles, is much smoother. The wrinkles are still visible when I move my forehead, but when I am just looking at my face in the mirror, they are smoothed out.
I will admit that I also used the ClarityRX Daily Dose of Water hyaluronic acid hydrating serum and Feel Better hyaluronic acid moisturizing cream daily, as well. My face drinks both of them up like it’s crazy thirsty.
ClarityRX doesn’t tell you what to do after the 21 days, but I guess I will take a bit of a break and see what happens. Which is a great thing, because Ramen noodles seriously suck, and stretching that $120 is a good thing.
In all honesty, I only used about 1/4 of the jar in the span of 21 days, so I should get 3 more 21 day rounds out of it. At $30 per 21 day cycle, that’s not bad at all! Not when it truly works!
When I run out, I’m going to have to get another jar. While I have my acne under control for the most part, and although my skin is looking better than ever, as time goes on, I know I will want a quick, 3-week refresher that only the Sleep It Off Mask can provide. There is no way, once I have used this jar up, that I will want to live without it. I’m not getting any younger!
You don’t have to believe me, though. Do your due diligence and research what other people have said about this product before you spend your hard-earned money and resort to Ramen noodles! Not all products work the same for everyone, so it’s important to get a well-rounded opinion about a product before you take the plunge. Especially when you’re coughing up $120!
If you do try it out, or if you already know about this magic sleep mask, I’d love to hear your experience!
