The Skincare Routine Step You’re Either Skipping or Overdoing

We all have a skincare routine.

Some of us are meticulous about it, while others are…let’s say…a bit lackadaisical about it. I’m not going to knock your skincare routine or pick on you. What works for you might not work for me, and vice versa.

But, there’s one critical part of your skincare routine that I would bet you’re either overdoing or skipping altogether. And, if you want that naturally glowy skin, you’re going to want to get this step down pat.


Do you exfoliate your face, your neck, and your body? If you do, how often are you exfoliating?

I’m going to put my skincare faux pax out on the table and admit that I used to do both – over-exfoliate and skip it altogether. I couldn’t really find a happy medium. I was all over the place with my routine, and with the tricks that my skin plays on me, I was always fighting against the tide.

Sometimes, I would incorporate exfoliating into my daily skincare routine for my face. Then, I would stop doing it because my face would break out. Or, I would totally overdo it. The vicious cycle was ongoing.

I didn’t really think too much about exfoliating the rest of my body, either.

However, if you want silky soft, smooth looking skin that absorbs all those fancy schmancy serums, oils, and moisturizers that you’ve doled out your hard-earned money for, exfoliation is an essential step that you shouldn’t forget.

Why We Need to Exfoliate

Before we get to the when, where, and how, I want to talk about why we need to exfoliate.

Our skin automatically sheds old cells, which start to build up on the top layer of our skin, resulting in dullness, roughness, and/or dryness, depending on the type of skin you have.

This dead skin cell build-up clogs our pores, and if your skin is anything like mine, your oil glands will start working overtime, because they are trying to compensate for the dryness. All of this working together can lead to blemishes for a lot of us. For those of you with perfect skin: 😛😛.

I know, gross, but visuals help me understand better, too. So, we want to get those dead skin cells off of our skin before they lead to worse problems.

Our skin actually has a natural exfoliating process, but as we get older  (😱😱😱), that process slows down. So, we have to help our skin keep up that natural cycle by exfoliating it.

Benefits of Exfoliating

I want to quickly go over the benefits of exfoliating, not just your face, but your entire body. When you exfoliate your skin, you:

  • Experience smoother skin.
  • Reduce the appearance of age/dark spots.
  • Decrease clogged pores and acne breakouts.
  • Minimize how your large pores appear.
  • Eliminate infections deep within skin layers.
  • Smooth out how your knees and elbows appear.
  • Help your moisturizer (and other products) to absorb into your skin better.
  • Boost collagen production, thus smoothing lines and wrinkles.
  • Make removing hair easier.
  • Allow self-tanners to absorb better (and your faux tan will look more unified).
  • Prevent ingrown hairs.
  • Smooth out razor bumps.
  • Reduce stress.

How to Exfoliate

There are so many different techniques that you can use to exfoliate your skin!

I prefer to use scrubs that are made with sea salt granules or coffee granules for my face and body, because… well, they are natural, and you know how I love natural and organic ingredients!

You can use a body brush, a loofah, or exfoliating gloves. Pumice stones are excellent for when your feet start to get crusty. 😂😂

There are hemp body mitts, silicone scrubby pads, files (see pic below), and so many other tools to choose from.

There are also plenty of battery operated facial scrub brushes on the market to help exfoliate your face.

If you can’t afford the biggest and baddest, don’t worry, the generic ones at the drug store will work just fine. Bare Minerals also has a hand-held brush that is not battery-operated. Just use elbow juice:

Be sure that the bristles are not overly abrasive – you don’t want to tear your skin up, just remove the dead skin cells.

How Often to Exfoliate?

The answer to this is going to differ from one person to the next, and greatly depends on your skin type.

Ideally, you should be exfoliating twice a week. However, if your skin is more sensitive, twice per week could be too much. If your skin is oily like mine, you might need to exfoliate it more than twice per week.

Essentially, you will have to play it by ear and see what works for your skin type.

Remember that circular motions are less abrasive and more effective than moving your exfoliating tools and scrubs in a back and forth motion. The circular motion also helps to loosen ingrown hairs.

  1. Tweezerman also has a similar brush to the Bare Minerals that you can get at Ulta or off their website. They also carry a similar product at Target and Rite Aid, only less expensive. I usually exfoliate twice a week. I do have sensitive skin so I just need to use gentle product’s. I use one of those little lightly textured sponges to wash my face, but just received my new skincare regimen and the cleanser is different so I think I’ll be investing in one of those brushes I was talking about…lol I’d really like a Clairsonic!


    1. I’m excited to hear how your new skincare regimen works for you! I do have the Michael Todd Soniclear petite, but since I haven’t tried it yet, I didn’t want to mention it. (Not endorsing anything I haven’t tried!) Thank you for your suggestions! And, yes, the one battery operated facial brush in the pic (not the Bare Minerals one) is from Rite Aid. I actually really like that one, so when that one no longer makes me happy, I’ll give the Michael Todd one a spin!
